MacLeods’ Tables Mountains
2 flat topped mountains - Healabhal Bheag (1,601 ft) and Healabhal Mhor (1,538 ft) made from basalt lava flows some 60 million years ago. The flat tops are formed from a particularly hard layer whose topping of soft ash has been removed by the forces of erosion. Their name is said to have come from an event in the 16th’ century, when the MacLeod Chief, goaded by lowland nobles, invited them all to experience for themselves, the grandeur of the surroundings and a sumptuous banquet at “MacLeods’ Tables” on Skye You can walk up them too
