Crofting : the system of small- holding associated with the Highlands and Islands. Usually tenanted, average of 4 acres of arable land with access to common grazing for sheep and organised in townships. Other jobs such as seasonal hotel work, B&B, fishing, post-man, teacher may be part of the crofling life.
Between 1785 and 1850 the Highlands and Islands of Scotland witnessed a social upheaval in which tens of thousands of clansmen were removed from their homes and small-holdings to make way for large scale sheep farming. They were conducted in an autocratic and often brutal manner. Many people were driven; some just felt they had to leave and find a better life in the new settlements of America Canada and Australia. Those who remained struggled on poor land. However, Highlanders felt they to be a distinct cultural entity with their own concepts of land tenure based on the old clan system and had a particular tenacious attachment to the ancient habitat. Even today, the whole subject is fraught with emotive undertones and remains both sensitive and contentious.
