Trumpan
Churchyard. The present building dates from the late medieval period
and is an interesting historical site. It is
also famous for the notorious burning of local MacLeods at prayer in 1578
by MacDonalds. In revenge the Macleods caught up with the MacDonalds before
they could get back to their ships and put every MacDonald to the sword.
The MacLeod’s refused to give their foes a Christian burial and instead
tore down the dyke beside them casting down stones and rubble on the bodies.
Hence the Battle of the Spoiling of the Dyke and the inspiration for a
MacCrimmon pibaireachd |
